De Hallen Haarlem presents a trio of recently acquired works by the Swedish artist Klara Lidén. Over the past years she has created an international furore with solo exhibitions in the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and London's Serpentine Gallery , among other venues. In addition to her video work Bodies of Society, purchased in 2006, two works acquired last year will be shown: Der Mythos des Fortschritts (Moonwalk) (2008), and Kasta Macka (2009).
In her videos Klara Lidén (b. Stockholm, 1979) takes aim at prevailing social norms and the modernist idea of progress. Two recent acquisitions by De Hallen Haarlem, Der Mythos des Fortschritts (Moonwalk) (2008) and Kasta Macka (2009), illustrate the way in which she works. Both videos take place in metropolitan public space and convey a sense of annoyance and boredom. Lidén's actions (such as performing a 'moonwalk' on the street here, or skipping stones on a river) are intended as tragicomic acts of resistance against the routine of everyday life. Such acts also refer back to Fluxus, from the 1960s: everyday actions taken out of their original context and in that way particularised, like Wim T. Schippers pouring out the bottle of a soft drink in the sea.
The video Bodies of Society (2006) also shows how Lidén performs a completely pointless action, unsettling the viewer's expectations in the process. Indoors, and armed with a steel rod, she smashes a bicycle to pieces an act that you would more likely expect to see happen in a public space.
