In autumn 2011, occupying the entire site, the Museum will present the first exhibition showcasing the combined potential of the Fundació ”la Caixa” and MACBA collections. This is the first initiative in a series of projects in which these two collections, with total holdings of some 4,450 works en total, will entire into dialogue and demonstrate their mutually complementary nature.

The Fundació ”la Caixa” Collection was established in the early-1980s with a clear, socially committed remit to provide a public service. A key line of action, amongst others, is its focus on international art from the 1980s, particularly from Germany (Joseph Beuys, Katharina Fritsch, Harald Klingelhöller, Gerhard Merz, Reinhard Mucha, Penk, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Thomas Struth and Rosemarie Trockel, amongst others) and North America (Carl André, Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, Richard Serra…).

The MACBA Collection is designed to provide an organising framework for the Museum programme as a whole. Eschewing chronological and linear readings, the Collection proposes new, interrelated readings that connect the past with the present and the future. Along with thematic cores (play and pleasure, institutional critique and the media, language and its expressive potential, television, film, theatre, dance and its hybrids as languages transforming art, etc.), around which the Collection is organised, it also embodies a new interest in productions that bring together sound, image and light as priority materials in artistic creation.

This exhibition seeks to illustrate the artistic paradigm shift that occurred in the late-20th century. This shift was from a sculptural concept of the artwork (in which the work generates and orders the space around it) to a narrative idea based on the passing of time and its sound and oral component. From the architectural space to the sound space, the breakdown and emergency of a new model was introduced by video in film format and has gradually cast off its visual support to focus more and more on multi-sensory aspects that give pride of place to the sense of hearing.

Curators: Bartomeu Marí and Antònia Maria Perelló , in cooperation with Nimfa Bisbe. Organised and produced by: Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and Fundació ”la Caixa”.
