Post-colonial hybrid, cultural masquerade, outsider art, ultra-baroque, post-minimalist, global realism, drag artthese are just some of the ways the works in this gallery have been described. Their common thread is a global viewpoint balanced by strong ethnic and cultural references.
Using a wide range of media (including textiles and found objects), the artists of these works explore the complex relationship between the global and the local in the world todaya world in which personal, geographical, and cultural borders are frequently crossed via travel, the media, and the Internet. Although provocative, threatening, and even cynical at times, these works suggest an optimistic search for universal meanings and understandings. In the process, they also suggest new possibilities and hopes for a global future.
