Profil

Cubitt is an independent organisation controlled by its members: a community of over 30 artists dedicated to enlivening London's cultural communities. Cubitt upholds the importance of the artist-run space, and by virtue of its diverse studio, gallery and off-site activities, continues to promote national and international developments in visual culture. These comprise exhibitions, performances, screenings, symposia, talks given by artists, critics or curators as well as educational projects.

History

Cubitt was founded in 1991 as an artist-run gallery and studios and has been a registered charity since 1995. Cubitt started its activities at Goodsway in London's Kings Cross area, moved to Cubitt Street (hence the name) and later to Caledonia Road. In 2001 we finally relocated from King's Cross to 8 Angel Mews in Islington.

The first exhibitions in Cubitt's gallery at King's Cross were organised by the studio artists whose ambition was to show work by their peers amid a conservative London gallery scene. As artists took on the role of curator, the gallery established itself early on as an alternative to the institutional system and a place where dominant curatorial practices were challenged. In the mid-ninties Cubitt began to invite outside curators to organise exhibitions.

With its move in 2001 Cubitt underwent a major structural development. After years of self-funding and occasional project funding, Cubitt's gallery is now the recipient of fixed-term funding from Arts Council England (former: London Arts) as part of the small-scale galleries sector alongside Showroom, Matt's Gallery, Chisenhale, Gasworks and Cafe Gallery. This funding has allowed Cubitt to employ a part-time manager and bookkeeper and award an 18-month curator's bursary to instigate and develop the gallery programme. In 2007 Cubitt started an ambitious education programme and employed a part-time education co-ordinator. The manager, bookkeeper, curator and education co-ordinator report to the Gallery Committee (comprised of studioholders) and the Board of Trustees.
