Profil
Ellipse Foundation was officially established in 2004 with the purpose of supporting contemporary artists through various initiatives, including acquisitions, the production of works of art, exhibitions, special projects and educational programmes.
The collection consists of around 900 works on various media - painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film and video and installation - and is representative of the key trends in international contemporary art of the last three decades. The collection was organised around three main categories: seminal artists active since the 1970s, artists mid-way through their respective careers and young and emerging artists from the 21st century.
Ellipse Foundation is the fruit of the initiative of João Oliveira Rendeiro, who began collecting
The Ellipse Foundation Art Centre, inaugurated on May 2006, is a 3,500-square-meters converted warehouse in Estoril/Alcoitão, designed by Lisbon-based architect, free-lance critic and curator Pedro Gadanho, in partnership with Atelier de Santos (a.s.). They created ten exhibition rooms, storage and specific areas that house not only exhibitions of works from the Collection, but also different activities like educational services, artist residency programs and special projects. This state-of the art facility will firmly establish the seaside town of Cascais, outside Lisbon, as a hub for art produced from 1979 to the present.
