Profil

Meulensteen is a contemporary art gallery active in both the primary and secondary markets. The gallery prides itself on the collaborative relationships it fosters with its global roster of established and emerging artists and is committed to showcasing conceptually rigorous projects. The gallery inaugurated its fall 2010 season with Venice Case Study, a solo show of 2000 Hugo Boss Prize winner Marjetica Potrc . Recent shows include Oliver Herring 's Areas for Action, an ambitious exhibition of ongoing performances, improvisatory sculptures, and real-time collaborative artworks, and a curated exhibition of Scott Burton 's acclaimed functional sculpture.

These artists form part of a robust program featuring some of the most influential artists working today, including Siah Armajani , Chen Qiulin , Saul Chernick , Mike Cloud , Hai Bo , Zach Harris, Tim Hyde , Ann Pibal , Tobias Putrih , Keita Sugiura , Sun Xun , Siebren Versteeg , Gao Shiqiang, Qiu Jiongjiong, and Betty Woodman . Recent additions include Katayoun Vaziri , Alice Miceli , Maximiliano Ferro, Eli Levenstein , Tun Win Aung and Wah Nu, and Andrea Galvani . The gallery's artists have exhibited in leading exhibitions such as the Venice, São Paolo, and Whitney biennials, and at international museums including the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum , Centre-Pompidou, Walker Art Center , Stedelijk Museum, Kunsthalle Basel , Frankfurt Museum für Moderne Kunst, Hammer Museum, and Queensland Art Gallery . Their many awards and fellowships include the Guggenheim, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Joan Mitchell, Rockefeller, Pollock-Krasner and McKnight awards, multiple fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Chinese Contemporary Artist Award and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Meulensteen is also the leading purveyor of contemporary architectural renderings as works of art, building on the work of former gallery owner Max Protetch. Furthering this legacy, Meulensteen will present Architecture Beyond Paper in the summer of 2011. This exhibition will explore the possibilities for architectural artworks in the digital age and will be accompanied by a publication and a symposium bringing together leading practitioners, writers, and critics in the field.

The gallery has a longstanding and fruitful relationship with Chinese artists thanks to director Josie Browne's fifteen years of experience in the field. Ms. Browne played a pioneering role in introducing Chinese contemporary art to Western audiences and oversaw the first American commercial exhibitions of preeminent Chinese contemporary artists including Hai Bo , Yue Minjun, Zhang Huan, Zhang Xiaogang . On February 24, 2011 the gallery will present In a Perfect World…, a group show introducing a bold new generation of Chinese artists. The exhibition will be curated by James Elaine, former curator of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and the Drawing Center in New York.
