Profil
The MAC opened in 1994, in a 1970s building donated to the town of Marseille by Doctor Rau.
The contemporary art collection brings together work from the 1960s to the present, offering a broad view of current practices. The collection is composed of deposits from the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain, the FRAC Provence Alpes Cotes-d'Azur and the Caisse des Dépots et Consignations, as well as donations from collectors, private galleries and artists. Thus, forty major works enriched the collection in 1997 thanks to a deposit from the Reinhard Onnasch Collection in Berlin.
Throughout the year, the MAC presents temporary exhibitions alongside various hangings of its collection.
As well as the 2500m2 dedicated to exhibitions, the MAC houses the Centre de Documentation Ernst Goldschmidt, open to the public Tuesday-Friday from 11am to 7pm. This documentation centre brings together 25 000 contemporary art publications and catalogues.
The onsite ciné-mac offers conferences, concerts, performances and projections.
