The Reh teagarden once stood high above the Rhine, on the old lateral moraine on the outskirts of Arnhem. In 1873, the architect Cornelis Outshoorn built a gentlemen's club for repatriated sugar planters from the Dutch East Indies on this unique site. The club did not last long, and in 1920 this spot became the location for the municipal museum of Arnhem. Over time, the building underwent major changes. The two largest renovations were the addition of a new wing in 1956, built by Eschauzier, and the recent extension by Hubert Jan Henket. He linked together a number of pre-fab units and erected a freestanding roof above them, creating a space for a shop, entrance hall, and a museum café with an optimal view over the sculpture garden and the Rhine.

Exceptional exhibition spaces in the museum include the Cupola Hall (formerly the club's ballroom) and the west wing, which features the Rijn Hall (built by Eschauzier and offering a beautiful view). The building was renovated in 2007. The cupola, which was not properly restored after being damaged during World War Two, was fixed up. A number of elements from the original architecture were restored by head architect Kees Tak. An expanded museum café with an interior designed by Soda interior designers was built in Henket's wing. The entrance and shop were returned to a central location in the building and the former library was turned into an exceptional auditorium by Hoogte Twee Architects.
