For over a quarter of a century, Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers have been at the forefront of developments in contemporary art. Developing and supporting the most innovative artists in a range of practices, Sprüth Magers continues to showcase new work by some of the most influential artists in the world, as well as supporting younger artists that work within the creative traditions championed by Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers.

The complementary exhibition programmes, and interests in such creative and theoretical themes as conceptualism, minimalism, feminism and photography shared by Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers, led them to merge their two Cologne galleries in 1998. A Munich gallery soon followed, as did a gallery in London in 2003 (which moved to another site in Mayfair in 2007). In October 2008, Sprüth Magers Berlin opened as the gallery's flagship space, a museum-scale site featuring three exhibition spaces as well as an artist's film and video store, Image Movement, designed by Rosemarie Trockel and Thea Djordjadze . The space, known as the Gartenbau located at Oranienburger Strasse 18, was previously an old social clubs ballroom and later a lecture hall affiliated to Humboldt University, and has been redesigned by Barkow Leibinger Architects to host the gallery's projects.

Sprüth Magers Berlin and Sprüth Magers London continue to present provocative and illuminating exhibitions of genuine distinction. Sprüth Magers Berlin opened with an exhibition of new sculptural work by Thomas Scheibitz . Other artists recently shown there include Cindy Sherman , Fischli & Weiss , Louise Lawler , John Baldessari and George Condo . Sprüth Magers London has also maintained a fascinating exhibition programme since it reopened in May 2007, with exhibitions by Sterling Ruby , Robert Morris , Thomas Demand , Jenny Holzer and recently John Baldessari as well as Barbara Kruger .
