Carlos Bunga

Carlos Bunga (b. 1976) took the Portuguese artistic scene by storm when, a virtual unknown, he participated in the exhibition and won the EDP Novo Artista Award in 2003, held at Museu de Serralves.
Since then, Bunga’s work has been shown in prestigious exhibitions and venues, from “Manifesta” in San Sebastian to the Artists Space in New York and Galeria Elba Benìtez. Carlos Bunga has gained prominence thanks to his large-scale ephemeral interventions in the exhibition space, where references to architecture, particularly to precarious, run-down urban construction, are combined with a marked pictorial sense. The artist uses laminated cardboard to build aggregated structured elements. Choosing different colours, he then paints the interior walls, which are superimposed over the walls of the exhibition space. In the final stage of the process, he causes the collapse of these elements, leaving only the surfaces on the wall and the wrecks pilled on the floor. This way, he is inducing the acceleration of the process of degradation and ruin, in order to poetically unveil life’s meaning and destiny. This is Carlos Bunga’s first solo exhibition in Portugal.  ( Culturgest, Porto)
