Hermann Pitz - Profile

Hermann Pitz (born 1956 in Oldenburg, Germany) lives and works in Düsseldorf and Amsterdam and teaches at Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam. He studied at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin from 1975 to 1981. Pitz and his conceptual approach won first public and critical acclaim in 1978 with a series of exhibitions entitled Räume (Spaces) which he organized together with Berlin artists Raimund Kummer and Fritz Rahmann under the group name Büro Berlin. The now legendary exhibition showed works of international artists, who successively used the same Berlin factory space, creating their environmental installations with the remains of the work of the previous artist. Since then many international solo- and group exhibitions followed including presentations at New National Gallery Berlin, Witte de With Center Rotterdam, Kunsthalle Hamburg, documenta VIII and IX, XLIII Biennale di Venezia, Skulpturen Projekte Münster 1987 and 1997, Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, Palais des Beaux Arts Brüssel, IVAM Center Valencia, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris an the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Hermann Pitz works in a line of constant research and experimentation, typical for the European Avant-garde, which aims its analysis on the essence of contemporary art and the social function of the artist. His work evades the usual classifications, but can be described as sculptural or as installation art. Pitz works with found objects and personal memorabilia that are combined in Assemblages and Installations. The resulting works always incorporate the surrounding space and thus the viewer, but also point back to the history of the oeuvre and the author's biography. The individual pieces many times remain open for additions and changes or even their own incorporation in other works. Self-reflection and self-reference are thus strong aspects of the work which are strengthened by the frequent use of optical devices such as mirrors, lenses, cameras and reflectors that point to perception and capture and intensify the spatial qualities of Pitz' installations.
