Matei Bejenaru

I consider myself living in the periphery of a peripheral city (Iasi), of a peripheral country (Romania) from a peripheral region (South-Eastern Europe). That's why, I started to organize since 1997
the Periferic/Peripheral Contemporary Arts Biennial, in the idea to collect artistic attitudes related to PERIPHERY and its relationship to the CENTER. PERIFERIC is focusing on the Turkish Bath of Iasi where I want to organize, together with my collaborators, a center for contemporary culture.

As an artist, I participated at some of the most important Romanian contemporary art shows ("Ad-Hoc" at Ludwig Museum in Budapest in 1997 and "Transferatu" at IFA Gallery in Berlin in 2000). I was Artslink resident at ATC Space in Chicago in 2000. My works are based on my personal myhtologies and on reflections about history, menthalities and politics.
