Entering Shinique Smith's studio in Brooklyn is like being surrounded by a refined but trashy ambience, a sort of bizarre marriage between Karen Kilimnik and Mike Kelley's universes. Crap is turned to elegance and vice versa. Instead of Swarovski or African wooden knick-knacks, the artist collected an entire stable of day-glo, dusty "My Little Pony." Her favorite childhood dress, conserved in a frame, could be considered the key to get into the mood of both her space and her practice; every object is set to be the starting point of a new work or at least, an indispensable source of inspiration.
