| As an artist, Subodh Gupta is acquainted with and incorporated many forms like scooters, bicycles, steel utensils and even a spliced Ambassador, among other omnipresent and identifiably Indian 'items' peculiar to the state and country of his birth, to map transitions in cultural history and recorded the static of rural/ urban migrations. His humorous and often ironic work bears influences of his experiences of migration, displacement and travel. Gupta liberally employs clichés about the Indian middle class through which he articulates concerns and preoccupations of the Indian populace, such as religion, regional identity, rituals, poverty, urbanity, migration, and education. His work goes further than just simple representation. He monumentalizes cultural idiosyncrasies and objects, turning them into iconic and deific symbols. He successfully manages to make indigenous elements of his culture accessible to an international audience while remaining inherently Indian. Through his astute choice of his subject matter and materials, Gupta manages to effectively communicate at levels that traverse the local and the global. Gupta's work clearly enunciates the 'growing pains' felt by India, as a nation, and Indians as individuals. His works have an impressive scope in the reach of their vocabulary. Their banality having been packaged with irresistible finesse holds appeal to the foreign viewer and their decided 'Indian-ness' charms the local audience.
