The emirate of Abu Dhabi has put the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim on hold with a new opening date in 2015.
October 26, 2011: The construction of Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi, along with three other museums, is currently on hold after the government reviewed its pubic spending budget. The state-owned developer has canceled works and will refund the contractor for their bids.
Many are skeptical that the project would remain on track after the halt but a spokesperson from the Tourism Development and Investment Company says the project is not canceled and will resume construction with a targeted opening in the year 2015.
Originally Abu Dhabi was to reveal four new museums including a branch of the Louvre designed by Jean Nouvel, a Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim, a national museum by Norman Foster and a maritime museum. Louvre officials says construction with the Louvre is still on track and there is full funding for the project.
