Alan Charlton - Profile

"I am an artist who paints pictures of gray, but the pictures are not out of the interest of making monochrome paintings. I do not see the image within its frame, but what interests me is out." Alan Charlton pictures always define the space in which they depend. For exhibition situations the artist developed spatial concepts that lead to the selection of certain work. Or he also paints new pictures, which go into the structure and format to the given situation. Thus, Charlton's work have always been a notable presence in the room, accentuating aspects of their environment. And yet rejects all on the picture. Since the early 70's paints Charlton only gray images. The surface of the painted canvas is not structured by brush structures or the "signature" of the artist. The unimaginable horror of the variations in the work of Charlton's work sometimes in color, seem to be changing in different light conditions or the white and black zuzustreben. Reared on the stretcher canvas are all structured according to a basic module. The square of the depth of the stretcher is the degree to which all Charltonarbeiten is based. This module determines the sizes and proportions of the surfaces, the distances between the image parts, the distance to the wall. Through the self-imposed limitations and the precision of the operation of the artist opens up a tremendous freedom. Charlton pictures show beyond the format, open to the wall surface and to space. The perceptual readiness of the viewer is challenged by the work. And when the viewer gets involved in the gray images, it opens up new "spaces". In our gallery we have Berlin in 2006, the new series of the "Outline Paintings shown. © Doerrie Priess Galerie
