| The Prints and Drawings at the Städel Museum secures more than eighty printed graphics of the Norwegian Edvard Munch (1863-1944), including gifts of the artist and many acquisitions that have already occurred in his lifetime. An exhibition of impressive portfolio would like to acknowledge the outstanding significance of the prints of Edvard Munch and its pioneering role in art of the 20th Century can be illustrated. 1894, when Munch turned to printmaking, he was already successful as a painter. By his repeated visits to Berlin and Paris, he was familiar with the contemporary developments in artistic printmaking, he knew the work of Max Klinger, as well as that of Odilon Redon and Paul Gauguin. The comprehensive range of printed graphics work, which left Munch reflects his fascination with the special qualities of expression. Experiment he was able to combine the specific properties of the print graphic techniques of etching, lithography and woodcut, with complex content masterful and innovative. The selected motifs that those same of his paintings widely, he translated into each language characteristic of different graphic print media a process that always accompanies an image compression and concretization of the idea. As in his painting brought to Munch particular psychological states and inner processes of expression. With scenic descriptions, as well as symbolic, lonely landscapes thematize he created images, moods and life experiences such as love, jealousy, fear, illness or bereavement. But the portrait is a central aim of Munch's prints of great importance. Portraits of Count Harry Kessler, the Munch in Berlin met by the family members of the Lübeck collector Dr. Max Linde, in his behalf, among other things, the portfolio "from the house of lime" was born, and lithographs by compatriot Henrik Ibsen, the Frenchmen Stéphane Mallarmé August Strindberg and the Swedish poet will be featured in the exhibition.
