Ernst Ludwig Kirchner - Profile

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), founding member of the artists "bridge" and one of the most important artists of expressionism, had a decisive influence on the art of classical modernism. The complete works of the painter, graphic artist and sculptor honors the Stadel Museum is now with the first comprehensive retrospective of 170 works in Germany for 30 years. "I marvel at the power of my images in the Städel," said Kirchner, 21 December 1925 in his diary. Kirchner's relations with the Städel and Frankfurt were narrow. In Frankfurt in 1916 was not only one of the first Kirchner exhibitions in general, which was also the first Stadel Museum, acquired 1919 painting by Kirchner. Building on Kirchner's own collection, which one of the world with many major works of the most important, presents the exhibition presents works from all phases of the artist. The paintings and works on paper sculpture and crafts made by Kirchner to the side in order to illustrate the many facets of his oeuvre. In addition to works from the classical stages of the "bridge time" with their nudity, the work from the big city life eventful years in Berlin with street scenes, the paintings, which reflect the existence of fear in the First World War, and the Davos work with subjects of the Swiss mountains also the lesser-known early and late work by the artist presented. The latter, controversial works in the "new style" that will impress you with uncompromising flatness and a high level of abstraction, will be seen together in Frankfurt for the first time in its entirety with his major works. It is noteworthy that the artist was inspired in his early work, particularly by French art. The retrospective provides a new view of the startling modernity Kirchner, whose life of excess in his art was reflected in an incomparable manner. (Städel Museum)
