| Heimo Zobernig is no strategist. His work is a quest for the elemental. Once found he puts these elements to various tests. But Zobernig is only a minimalist in his avoidance of the cranking-up of meta-levels. He dissects phenomena almost scientifically and presents their components in new constellations. For Zobernig the question is what art can produce. Progress requires sceptical analysis using many methods. "My reactions are ad hoc. I don't always know the outcome", he says. The search covers areas including architecture, furniture, design, performance, music, video, text and public art. Holistic thinking, free but with a down-to-earth approach characterize Zobernig's work. Devoid of pretentious self-glorification and refusing to take art too seriously, Zobernig has, nevertheless created a place for himself in the contemporary art world. Against a black wall his multi-faceted but simple preparatory exercises to modernism seem like a reconstruction of a historic show. Zobernig also stands what we usually call 'sculpture' on its head, sometimes literally. His work is a launching pad for fantasies and thoughts, both calculating and sensual.
