Joerg Immendorff has discussed, as no other German painters of the postwar generation, with the theme of German division. It is therefore situated in Goslar - in the former Zonenrandgebiet - the focus of the exhibition. As a programmatic work hangs in the entrance of the museum, the monumental painting "Small Travel (rabbit brawn)" cm by 1990 (250 x 500, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg). The artist is taking stock of the art situation one year after the border opening. The image is one of the key images of the complete work. Immendorff creates imaginary spaces, utopian places, and comments on political situations. It explores connections between artistic and political space, picks up on artistic genres and arranges, inspired by literary and artistic originals, large stage-like tableaux. In his sculptural strategy include pictures in pictures, emblems, symbols and types. These are of high recognition. Invite you to decipher a - and yet they are never quite interpret, allow for different interpretations. This constant change of perspective in his work, the combinatorics of references, codes and symbols from a huge visual-language fundus seems intuitive.
