It focuses on the ‘Kingsley Hall’ experiment (Philadelphia Association 1965-1969) and the ‘anti-psychiatry’ initiatives of the 1960s psychoanalyst and writer, R.D. Laing. It is presented at Spacex as part of the Free Association Series, initiated on the centenary of Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams, re-examining the relationship of art and psychoanalysis after the Freudian century. In 1965 a community of about twenty people, including R.D. Laing, moved into a large old building in the East End of London called Kingsley Hall. Over the next five years the leaders of anti-psychiatry and their former ‘patients’, who according to Laing made “a career of schizophrenia”, lived together, collectively exploring the definitions of madness and its relationship to social convention and the family. In Kingsley Hall the pre-conceived hierarchy of doctor-patient relations was dismantled, and henceforth no one was encouraged to act out the roles of ‘doctors’ or ‘patients’. The household’s two major principles were, firstly, “Its all up for grabs”, and secondly, “Everything that is not forbidden is allowed, and everything that is not allowed is forbidden”. This radical social experiment rapidly became the controversial heart of the Sixties counter-culture, with spin-off ventures such as the conference on the Dialectics of Liberation and a painting exhibition at Camden Arts Centre in 1969 by resident, Mary Barnes, mapping the journey of her regression to childhood and back again. What you see is where you’re at is a collage of ‘found’ and archived sound and film recordings, providing an insight into the experiences of the residents at Kingsley Hall, re-appraising its relevance to contemporary society, and the culture of oppressive psychiatry and multi-national pharmaceutical companies. It is presented courtesy of The Modern Institute , Glasgow, and was first shown at Dundee Contemporary Arts in 2001. It was included as part of Manifest a 4, Frankfurt, in 2002. Luke Fowler (born 1978) has exhibited widely in Europe, with solo exhibitions at Transmission, Glasgow, and Generator, Dundee. As well as Manifest a 4, he was included in Zenomap at the 50th Venice Biennale. Forthcoming exhibitions include Cubitt Gallery, London, and touring exhibitions in Russia and New Zealand. Pressetext
