| Marc Bijl is interested in social structures and their (mis)use of slogans, logo's, symbols and code's. His counter-cultural (video)performances and (illegal) interventions play with our perception of what takes place in public space while his installations or objects are icons of temporarely fanaticism wich can lead to nationalism, terrorism, religious fanaticism and finally death. But, according to the artist, human nature is attracted to these simplifying structure methods (logo's, symbols, (political) slogans, prayers, or even advertisements) more than it needs freedom to do without all that information There is a romantic desire hidden in his attempt to understand the world we live in. © Artnews.org A search into the nature of society' 2006. Booth Upstream Gallery at Art Forum Berlin 2006 The works and interventions of the Dutch artist Marc Bijl are based upon social issues and their use of symbols and rules. This can result in interventions in the public space, sculptures or installations that undermine or underline this perception of the world. Whether it's Politics, Religion, (anti)Globalization, or the art world itself, Marc Bijl wants to attack their superficial image or myth.
