Margret Hoppe - Profile |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| "(After)Images of the City" unfolds its idea along the dialectical tension of the desire to represent a certain place and the impossibility to pin down a comprehensible narration about the setting - due to its complex and unstable conditions. The show presents photographs of sites that underwent fundamental changes in their urban geographies: It assembles images of the urban space in post-socialist East Germany. Margret Hoppe's works collect traces of changes in East Germany in the aftermath of the year 1989, as for example in the series "Gästehaus des Ministerrates der DDR" (Guest house of the Council of Ministers, GDR), Leipzig, 2007. The guest house was one of the most representative buildings in Leipzig where top political figures from the GDR occasionally stayed. Once a magnificent building from the 1960's, it is now ruined and ready for demolition. Hoppe's works are sensitive to certain places along with the stories connected to them. Her photographs carry the recent and current German and European history. The approach to be sensitive towards specific sites and to embrace historical layers has become a decisive technique in contemporary art productions. Focusing on the space and its conditions was recently called for by the historian Karl Schlögel. His "Im Raume lesen wir die Zeit" (The time is read in the space) argues that history is mainly a matter of space, not dominantly of time. This argument is twofold: On the one hand he agrees with the impossibility to write history along structured master narratives. But then, on the other hand, he rejects the assumption that this loss means the end of all narratives. Instead, the stories to tell, today, depart from the space as a complex palimpsest that has to be investigated, deciphered and retold en detail. Margret Hoppe enters the complex reality of the space, and she reconstructs the period of socialism in East Germany en detail by collecting bits and pieces, fragments and remnants. But her attempt seems to succeed only "partially" due to the uncertain and unstable subjects she chooses. She focuses on peripheral and vague perspectives, avoiding representative sights. Margret presents empty spaces and neglected scenes that bear the instant of "after", they are "(After)Images of the City". In that sense she follows the dialectical tension of representing a certain story while knowing that the desire to represent will fail. To put it in Schlögel´s terms: She tells stories after the end of master narratives by meticulously dissecting traces and documenting them in complex tableaus. Margret Hoppe's tableaus of post-socialist East Germany are presented in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Even though her critical approach to the urban space and its historical traces emanates from specific experiences in East Germany, it resonates with post-socialist Bosnia and Herzegovina. - The demanding venue means that in addition to its post-socialist condition, here, the instant of "post" is even potentiated due to the "post-conflict" state of society. The region's complex historical layers, hardly observed until now, are challenged by Hoppe's documenta ry gaze.
