| Max Liebermann (July 20, 1847 in Berlin, February 8, 1935) was a German painter and graphic artist. He is one of the most important representatives of German impressionism. After training in Weimar and stays in Paris and the Netherlands, he created first naturalistic works with social themes. By dealing with the French Impressionists, he found since 1880 in a bright color and a lively paint that is shaping his main work. His work is symbolic of the transition from the art of the 19th Century through to classic modern art at the time of Wilhelmine and Weimar Republic. This change he promoted as president of the Berlin Secession. From 1920 to 1933 he headed the Prussian Academy of the Arts before resigning as a result of Nazi influence on the art of politics.
