| For him, a central reference system is the exceedingly rich antique world of gold myths (from the golden age to the golden fleece, from the golden calf to the goldfinger Midas). In his Faute de l'architecture sauvée, a lovingly rendered, minature replica of the famous Tholos sanctuary in Delphi rests upon an overwrought, gold-crowned pedestal (an object possessing near abject perfection). Of course, the pathetic construction of the stage topples into the grotesque once one discovers how the model was constructed: the stones are made of paper tissues held in place with snot and sperm. Hofstetter's photographs of smoke-that floats skyward before a golden curtain-might also recall antique cults and the objectification of wishes in offering had one not attempted to take the beautiful surface of the ephemera simply for itself."
