| Since the late sixties, the photographer Nan Goldin is a highly extensive oeuvre. Based on the aesthetics of informal snapshots documented above all their friends as a substitute family. The photographed are never objects of a distant, voyeuristic gaze, but acquaintances and friends, accustomed to the presence of Goldin camera. The viewer will intimate insight into the life worlds, which are often on the fringes of social acceptance are the exact title of the photograph with name, place and date it penetrates deep into the privacy of the depicted one. Their unpretentious imagery Goldin is overvalued by a strong focus on interiors, often garish colors and theatrical lighting. The transvestites and cross-Dresser-scene, drug addicts and AIDS sufferers, whose life and death it documented, but also self-portraits are among the main subjects of their work. Hundreds of photographs includes her frequently and repeatedly updated slide show "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" (from 1980). Here, as in all her photographs is the frightening fragility of human relations, the predominant motif content. Goldin influence on the aesthetics of contemporary documentary and fashion photography is immense.
