| Stefan Schessl (*1967) is conscious (and as Nietzsche knew, consciousness is already a surface), that surface does not lack depth, just as everything that gleams is gold (and that nothing lies beneath the band-aid, as we must painfully learn). The belief in a necessary depth that is principally high value is hopelessly romantic and ultimately as reactionary as the belief in the inevitable graphic quality of painting, which Schessl has refuted with various strategies for many years. Whether it's a golden sprinkle on the black-blue ground of his works on paper or the gold foundation of his large, oval paintings (which negate any similarity to traditional panel paintings through their form alone) that is penetrated by vexing marks and signs of repainting: in the Schessl painterly indeterminacy principle, associative possibilities are superimposed with their cancellation in the moment of their spark. Taking the place of forms and figures are simple, colorful sensations without purpose-a magnificent nothing (but a none-the-less nothing).
