Susan Collis - Profile

Susan Collis reproduces factory-produced objects in more noble materials than the originals. Some rawl plugs, a screw, seemingly forgotten from a previous exhibition prove to be hand-made small stone sculptures, or a screw made of silver, meticulously made by hand. They are objects that have lost the function of the originals. The rawl plugs are devoid of the expanding function the original needs to be functional, and the silver screw cannot be handled by a screwdriver, as screws ought to be. They are jewellery attached to the wall. The crafts element plays an important part in the works of Susan Collis, Toril Johannessen and Ane Mette Hol, the works seem to be randomly made or mass-produced for a specific function, while in reality they are handcrafted visual objects. Susan Collis (born 1956, UK) graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2002. Earlier this year, Collis won the Illy Prize at Art Rotterdam. In 2009, she participated in the group exhibitions Bizarre Perfection at The Israel Museum in Jerusalem and Apparently Invisible at The Drawing Center in New York. Susan Collis lives and works in London, UK. (Lantom, Oslo)
