Sven Johne - Profile

(Profile only availible in german - translated by machine) The starting point in Sven Johnes cyclically-term work are true, mostly taken from the local press stories. He developed from this documenta ry traces fiction stories, he combines aesthetics with atmospheric photographs. With modest resources, the artist developed his stories often assembled from found images, sometimes with a video camera with its own and rarely used. This narrative is always of social reality, from small and major disasters and incidents involving, a metaphorical level, social and psychological sensitivities expression. Five stories told by the failure of the series "Vinta" (2004) in allusion to the legend that Vineta sunken island. Sven Johne discovered during his research for the Greifswald Oie, the small eastern German island that various people have tried to achieve in this place to "a dream" and it failed. Six diptychs show portraits of characters and objects siknifikante from the failed projects. The work "Ship Cancellation" (2004) shows photographs in an incredibly quiet nothing but empty sea surface, which becomes somewhere in the distance in the sky. The sky is not very blue, and the sea is not especially turquoise. Nevertheless, the images are beautiful in their uneventful way. Meditation is the first word that comes to mind. Until you read the fine print. Just over the horizon we find the name of a ship and coordinate specifications. But first creates the text in the lower right corner of the image clarity: "The 120-meter freighter left Darwin, Australia, on 12 June 1918 with the aim of Southampton. The Empire was one of the first cargo ships that own cranes on board had to be faster in ports to load and unload. On the second day on sea, the ship ran into a storm that smashed into the result of the unsecured crane superstructure and the deck. The Empire sank within ten minutes. " Johne has a keen sense for the absurd. "If you ask a sailor, so he chose his profession, say the most: Because I wanted to see the art world and was fascinated. 'It has none of both to do with reality," he says. "The technology works almost by itself. And the world is also not known. In most of the ports are not of the sailors aboard. Actually, the sailor for me the epitome of modern man: lack of commitment to the mobile and only for the work is there. "(Kunstverein Dortmund)
