| Ulla von Brandenburg works with a wide range of media: drawings, watercolors and murals, cutouts and fabric work, video and 16mm film, installations and performance. Merkwürdig known and simultaneously diffuse verrätselt appear often-staged theatrical presentations of Brandenburg, with the frozen gestures of their protagonists, the symbolic importance of superimposed objects, subjective camera and space developments. Ulla von Brandenburg uses for her designs from a large historical picture fundus, whose representation conventions we all more or less, often even unconscious, are familiar. The figure groups of Brandenburg, and their often theatrical gestures, have their roots, for example in the picture formulas of Tarot cards, early photographs and representations of tableaux vivants, fair and sensations topics such as occultism, magic, disease and hysteria. Their exaggerated in the depiction of human, often ritualistic interactions seems good in the works of Brandenburg also far more by abstraction. Also in their experience in space-related work, the artist deals with the tensions between open gestures and limitation convention.
