Willie Doherty lives and works in Northern Ireland. In his video work the first obvious issue is his Irish homeland, in political and aesthetic images of the impact of the Northern Ireland conflict on the country and the people who live there. Stylistic devices of film noir to create often subliminally threatening atmosphere. It is the ambiguity of situations and their interpretation with which Doherty his audience under the spell of his film suggestive images and text moves. Visible traces of the civil war, such as watchtowers, roadblocks, deserted, desolate sites or claustrophobic architectural fragments, but also almost idyllic landscape clippings tilt into its effect on the viewer by repeatedly threatening to the innocent beauty and vice versa. Even the silent or off rezitierenden or strange voices accompanied by the protagonists of his videos seem simultaneously victims and perpetrators, danger and temptation to be. On a formal level corresponds to the often dualistic conception.
