ProfileIn presenting the exhibition Retreat by Mike Bouchet , we are going to inaugurate our new location in the former tile showroom of the Brüder Schwadron company at No. 3 Franz-Josefs-Kai in Vienna's first district on May 6, 2010. In the future, all our previous activities in the field of contemporary art will be concentrated in one place, while we will continue in our efforts to make contemporary art accessible to a broad public. The focus of our exhibition program will therefore be on individual presentations of young artists whose works are to be introduced to a wide audience for the first time. We are committed to the artistic approaches and concepts of this younger generation and perceive ourselves as a venue where current developments in art production are made visible by our acting as a mediator between the art scenes of various metropolises. By hosting an ambitious supporting program of concerts and events on Wednesdays, we also intend to make BAWAG Contemporary a popular meeting place of the Viennese cultural scene. As a non-profit institution, we will continue to offer free admission to all our exhibitions, as well as free guided tours and various educational packages.
With its art gallery having been founded in 1974, BAWAG was one of the first companies in Austria to become active in this field and has assumed a forward-looking position within the Austrian art landscape ever since. In contrast to the general tendency of promoting sensational cultural events and spectacles, we encourage artistic approaches that distinguish themselves by quality and sustainability and seriously deal with current social developments. Many young artists - such as Kutlug Ataman , Candice Breitz , Elmgreen & Dragset, Atelier van Lieshout , Lee Bul l, Salla Tykkä , Jeremy Deller , and Tal R - had had their first solo exhibitions here with us in Austria a long time before they caught the attention of prominent international art institutions. On the other hand, we also brought about the revival of long-established artists - including Richard Tuttle , Richard Jackson , Jef Geys , Susan Hiller , Öyvind Fahlström , and Franz Erhard Walther - whose works subsequently resurfaced in major art establishments. In our new showrooms, we will devote ourselves to these tendencies even more extensively than before. BAWAG Contemporary will consistently pursue the path once chosen and thus signalize that contemporary art will continue to play an important role in our corporate culture also in the future. represented artistsExhibitions |
