Since its foundation, the Luigi Pecci Centre for Contemporary Art has been characterized as a 'complex' institution. This well-worn term is used to describe a cultural facility devoted to the present, but leaving to one side all rhetoric and the trite syntheses to be found in a good deal of specialist literature, it is still the term that best reflects the character and history of the Pecci Centre.

The initial set-up of the centre encompassed a whole spectrum of facilities and activities: exhibition halls for collective and solo shows by major international artists; a cultural mediation section founded by Bruno Munari ; a well-stocked, specialized library open to the public - which was also the first operative 'virtual' reading room (the CID/Visual Arts); an open-air theatre; and a department for organizing live shows and events. Undoubtedly a novelty on the Italian scene when it opened, the museum continues to reflect the various expressive forms of contemporary artistic disciplines.

In its twenty years of activity, the Pecci Centre has expressed countless values, presenting itself variously as a place for exhibition and study; a space for interdisciplinary experimentation and for investigating the most recent trends; and a point of reference for learning about the art of our time in a region steeped in history and tradition.

Through all the varied initiatives and events the centre has promoted over the years, its original potential has remained intact, and it has continued to adhere to a formula that was unique then and that other museums have since made their own.
