ProfileWhat`s on in Cologne with pictures or without pictures On April 30th Galerie Christian Nagel will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Founded in Cologne in 1990 the gallery has represented and attended artists whose works show developed social and political positions, compellingly expressed with a distinctive aesthetic language. The opening exhibition in Cologne was also Cosima von Bonin's first solo show. After that we welcomed Michael Krebber, Joseph Zehrer , Christian Philipp Müller , Andrea Fraser , Hans-Jörg Mayer , Heimo Zobernig , Mark Dion , Renée Green, Clegg & Guttmann, Stephan Dillemuth , Kai Althoff , Josephine Pryde , Merlin Carpenter , Catherine Sullivan and John Miller . Together with Martha Rosler , Adrian Piper and Stephan Willats, Galerie Christian Nagel represents groundbreaking conceptual art positions with strategies reaching back to the 1960s. A younger generation, including Stephanie Taylor , Kalin Lindena , Stefan Müller , Cornelius Quabeck , Jan Timme , Lutz Braun , Sven Johne , Rachel Harrison and Michael Beutler , came after the 2002 opening of the new space on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin . Gang Zhao , Peking/ New York and Kader Attia , Paris/Algeria are artists of bilateral heritage who reflect on canonized Western positions from a trans- cultural perspective. In our gallery work we always saw it as important to recognise and support the next generation. Finally with Hanna Schwarz , Julia Horstmann , Mirjam Thomann and Lone Haugaard Madsen , Kathryn Andrews , Keren Cytter , Dominik Sittig and Xavier Mary our gallery program was enriched with important young artists of the present. The 2000s have brought what appears to be a widespread, growing inclination towards art as a market commodity. As in the beginning, we prefer to support artistic positions that invigorate and visualize the critical potential inherent in tensions between politics and aesthetics, content and form, work and context. In may 2010 we will open a new space in the city of Antwerp, an important location in the history of avantgarde art. Galerie Christian Nagel handles the and estates.
