Galleries contain art from the 1400s until today. The museum has a Nordic profile, but the collection also includes Dutch and French art, including works by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet and Picasso.

On the top floor is the Fürstenberg Gallery, originally a private collection which was later donated to the museum. Here are paintings by artists such as Ernst Josephson, Carl Larsson, PS Krøyer and Anders Zorn. The Modern Art department is after 1945. In Stenasalen shows temporary exhibitions of new western Swedish art.

Here was a city theater, a concert hall, an art museum and an art gallery built. 1925 inaugurated the building as an art museum at Götaplatsen. In the 60's expanded museum with a bright new building suited to the old building.

In January 1996 the new museum entrance hall and extension that houses an exhibition hall for temporary exhibitions, Hasselblad Center , bookstore and cafe. Artist Paul Smith's gates in iron and bronze adorn the new entrance to the new to the building moved closer towards Götaplatsen and become more accessible.
