Profile

On the occasion of his 60th birthday, the industrialist Ernst Sachs (1867-1932) donated the Schweinfurt "Volks- und Hallenschwimmbad" (People's and Indoor Swimming Pool), which was completed in 1933. The imposing forecourt and the arrangement of the stand-alone building underline the orientation towards industry and the new building areas in the west of the city, an orientation which was deliberately intended at the time of building. The air raids of February and August 1944 caused serious damage, leading to the closure of the swimming pool. After comprehensive renovation, the building was also the seat of the America House until 1956. In 2003 the City Council decided to convert the building into a new domicile for the municipal gallery. Bathing was finally discontinued in August 2004. The characteristic spatial elements, which were already decided on at the time of building, remain preserved in the Art Hall. Visitors have free access to the inner courtyard in the summer months. The Art Hall is divided into three exhibition areas, the heart of which is the large hall on the ground floor. Light-coloured walls and ceilings, the transitions of which appear continuous thanks to the homogeneous lighting concept, frame the rooms; a massive stone floor assures the necessary horizontal arrangement of the interior areas.

The Museum Service MuSe meanwhile represents over eight years of didactic culture communication in the museums and galleries of the City of Schweinfurt and the Otto Schäfer Museum. The relocation of the MuSe office to the Art Hall also gave the MuSe workshop a new face - the studio under the arcades.
However, we are still keeping a close eye on our existing objectives in our new domicile: the lively and versatile communication of art and culture, always as close as possible to the original. We offer tailor-made courses, lectures, tours, workshops, further training programmes and discussions with artists, to name just a few aspects of our work. What is important for us is that we should offer the visitor a creative, practical approach to "art".
