Profile

The 2005 opening of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart in the very heart of the city hallmarked the start of a new era for Stuttgart. The spectacular new building is an outstanding city attraction, espe-cially at night, when the transparent outer shell of glass is brilliantly illuminated and the building's stone core can be seen from the outside. Visible from afar, this glass cube attracts numerous visitors with three or four large exhibitions each year; over one hundred thousand came to the special exhibition »Otto Dix and the Art of Portraiture«. The museum's real magnitude, however, is first revealed upon entering the actual exhibition area: the architects Rainer Hascher and Sebastian Jehle were able to discreetly extend the exhibition space to a total of 5000 square meters by ingeniously utilizing a disused tunnel system. Within this area the highlights of the city's art collection are presented in constant succession. The collection was established in 1924 with a donation made by Count Silvio della Valle di Casanova and today, growing constantly, comprises over 15000 modern and contemporary artworks. The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is renowned for its internationally unequalled collection of works by the artist Otto Dix . His 1927-28 triptych »Großstadt« and 1925 »Das Bildnis der Tänzerin Anita Berber« belong to the great masterpieces of the 20th century. Key works by artists such as Adolf Hölzel , Willi Baumeister , Fritz Winter , or Dieter Roth guarantee that a visit to the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart will be a memorable event. The richly varied exhibitions and accompanying events, diverse guided tours, as well as the award winning cuisine in the Kunstmuseum's restaurant »Cube« tempt visitors to return again soon.
