Profile
The Landesmuseum Mainz (the Mainz State Museum) is one of the oldest museums in Germany and it is located in the centre of Mainz in the Große Bleiche. The baroque building of the "Golden Horse Barracks" and the modern glass and steal construction facing the inner courtyard, together with the former royal stables form the attractive ensemble of the fundamentally renovated and modernised Landesmuseum.
The significant art and cultural historic collections range from the beginnings of culture to contemporary art. Departments include: the prehistoric period, the Roman period, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Prints and Drawings from the 16th - 20th century, Dutch painting, 18th century porcelain, 19th century painting, Judaica, city history, Art Nouveau glass and 20th century art. Numerous special exhibitions on contemporary art and art of the past add to the highly diverse range of exhibitions presented here.
Themed tours and talks give interesting and informative insights on the exhibits. The entertaining and varied offers from the museum's educational service are aimed at everyone from children aged 3 years to teenagers and adults.
