Profile

We are not only one of the five museums in Germany that the collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig initiated and support by generous donations, permanent loans and project funds, but also, since our opening in December 1992, we define ourselves through an active dialogue in modern art with our neighbouring country, France. In addition, we undertake international exhibition projects in Koblenz .

Based on resolutions of the founding committee, which included Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Peter Ludwig and a previous mayor of Koblenz , the art collection and the exhibition policies of the museum develop an important exchange with our neighbouring country, with France . The almost 300-year old connection of Koblenz with France , in the time of the protectorate as well as during the occupation, form a historical background that positions the museum with current starting points and questions.

With its location at the "Deutsche Eck" (German Corner), at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Mosel, and facing the "Kaiserdenkmal", which in 1992 was returned to its original form, the "Deutschherrenhaus" - the previous house of the German cavaliers - forms a vital counterpart to the historical orientation of the town.

The Ludwig Museum facilitates in a unique way a connection to contemporary art, primarily from France , and benefits from its connection to the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation, which has works of art in numerous national and international museums.

The exhibitions that the museum undertakes are therefore a many-voiced dialogue, referring on one hand to its own collection and developing particular positions, but also forming contexts to important developments within both French and international art. Furthermore we are mediators for French institutions and research facilities.
