Profile
(Profile only availible in german - translated by machine)
The Märkische Museum, a century ago, conceived as a local history museum in the former county of Mark and deals with the collection "patriotic antiquities," is now primarily a major museum for contemporary German art. The latest single and group exhibitions of contemporary art trends are tracked and presented.
In the art collection of the museum are about 4,000 works of outstanding examples of German painting and graphic art of the 20th Century has been collected. The collection of informal painting and graphics is one of the largest in the Federal Republic.
Some important works from own property have found their place as a permanent exhibit in the exhibition rooms, and includes the unique art-Engelbert-statue from the 13th Century and the Baroque Strünckede tomb.
The country-and local history collection has now focused on two important areas: a valuable coin collection, especially with dollars minted by the German ecclesiastical territories and a comprehensive library with over 40,000 volumes on the history and culture of Westphalia.
