Profile

Used for storing grain until the 1970s, the "Küppersmühle" has served as a centre for art since 1999. This imposing industrial monument was transformed by the world-renowned team of Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron into an art museum, providing currently some 3,600 sq.m. of exhibition space. The MKM is located at the heart of the vibrant cultural district of Duisburg's Inner Harbour. Boasting the Ströher Collection, an international exhibition programme and its characteristic architecture, the MKM has become a key cultural attraction in the Ruhr region: an ideal location, at which to experience great art, admire stunning architecture or just walk around and soak up the unique atmosphere.

The Ströher Collection
Distributed across 15 rooms, totalling some 2,500 sq.m. in area, the MKM presents key works from the Ströher Collection. Awaiting the viewer are (changing) works and work groups by some of the most influential German artists, dating from the 1950s to the present.

Enjoying not only national, but international acclaim, the artists featured in the collection include Georg Baselitz , Hanne Darboven , K.O. Götz, Candida Höfer , Gerhard Hoehme , Jörg Immendorff , Anselm Kiefer , Imi Knoebel , Markus Lüpertz , A.R. Penck , Sigmar Polke , Gerhard Richter , Bernard Schultze , Fred Thieler or Rosemarie Trockel .
In addition, various works charting the different creative periods of a number of artists are presented, which grant keen insights into their artistic development over the years and offer the opportunity to compare artistic trends.

International exhibition schedule
Each year, the MKM stages up to four exhibitions of international art, ranging from retrospectives of distinguished artists, theme-based group exhibitions to presentations showcasing the latest trends of individual artists or of a specific country's art scene.
A further exhibition series, "Akademos", is devoted to art produced by professors at the renowned Düsseldorf Art Academy.
