Profile
The new Museion is neither a traditional museum, nor a center for contemporary art. It is a museum of modern and contemporary art of a different kind.
The enrichment of Museion's collections will run parallel to the production of temporary exhibitions and interdisciplinary events, and will likewise synchronize with an artist-in-residency program that enjoys the collaboration of regional and international partners.
Museion is an art institution that sees the generation of projects and investigations in the field of contemporary art to offer timely possibilities for enlivening its collection and promoting new modes of aesthetic awareness. The region's multicultural and plurilinguisitic wealth and uniquely European complexity allow Museion to position itself as a flexible, meaningful, and stimulating place in which to experience the arts and the ways they find expression as parts of both regional and international dialogues.
Thanks to the great commitment of the Province of South Tyrol, the Museion collection will be able to add a new dimension to its holdings in the heritage of twentieth and twenty-first century art.
The collection's history
The Museion collection reflects the historical evolution of the institution. The first acquisitions concentrated on recent and historical works from the area of Greater Tyrol.
At the beginning of the 1990s, under the direction of Pier Luigi Siena, the collection expanded and began to include the works of Italian artists of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the works of artists who were active on the local scene. The theme of "art and language" became one of the cardinal points of the collection, which in 2000 incorporated Paolo Della Grazia's Archivio di Nuova Scrittura, in the form of a long-term loan. This loan consists of some two thousand works that center on investigations by artists who work in the areas that lie between images and words.
Under the stewardship of Andreas Hapkemeyer, Museion's Director from 2000 to 2006, the collection further expanded while turning its attention to contemporary international art.
