The history of the city's Museum Mönchengladbach goes back to 1904, after two years before the Museum Society was founded.
A small town history collection moved into the premises of a disused school, and from then on, the collections grew steadily. Through a landmark donation of the native monks Gladenbacher Dr. Walter Kaesbach in 1922, the museum came into possession of a high outstanding collection of Expressionist and was thus its profile as a museum for contemporary art. 1924 Oscar chilling donated his home in Bismarck street 97, in which the museum was housed until the opening of the new building on the abbey hill. Already in 1937 the collection was Kaesbach wide range of hunting of the "degenerate art" almost entirely a victim. The resulting gaps could never be closed, despite isolated repurchases Expressionist art after the war. Because of its modest budget, it was not possible to the museum to acquire works of art by modern masters. Instead, put the emphasis more on current trends. Last but not least Joseph Beuys had his first museum exhibition in Moenchengladbach. Zero, New Realism and Pop Art have been shown directly in the time of their creation, and they bought.
Since 1970, expanded the collection on permanent loan Etzold the collections of the museum. It is defined primarily by constructivist tendencies, Concrete art and Op Art to the opening of the museum Abteiberg 1982 also reached large areas of the Marx collection, such as the spectacular object remained "tallow" by Joseph Beuys , to Mönchengladbach and far beyond the originally agreed period and until 1998 in the Abbey Museum hill.
Outstanding new acquisitions in the 70s and 80s, were among others Of works by Gerhard Richter , Sigmar Polke and Rückriem; in the 90s by Mike Kelley, Franz West , Martin Kippenberger and Dieter Roth and Jonathan Meese.
In 2002 the decentralized Landesgartenschau Euroga 2002 developed into a real boon for the city of Moenchengladbach, not least because the sculpture garden of the museum with the support of North Rhine-Westphalia to several art works - including Larry Bell , Dan Peterman , Franz West , Jorge Pardo and Stefan Kern - could be enriched.
After over a year refurbishment and the achievement of closure of the museum Abteiberg celebrated its reopening on 11.4.2007 with a complete new presentation of his collection.
