Profile

What was formerly the bath hotel of the city of Cleves has been turned into a modern museum. The Museum Kurhaus Kleve has achieved an almost unique position inasmuch as it attracts not only people from the major German cities nearby, such as Düsseldorf and Cologne, but also from the Netherlands, e.g. from Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. In 2004 the museum has been awarded the title "Museum of the Year" by the International Association of Art Critics, German section.

Situated close to the baroque gardens of the eminent governor of the 17th century, Johann Moritz of Nassau-Siegen, the Museum Kurhaus Kleve presents a wide range of masterpieces form the late middle ages to classical modern ism and contemporary art. Moreover, it gives an insight into the history of the city of Cleves and its gardens - a famous spa and place for recreation between 1742 and 1914. Thus, the device of Johann Moritz, a great collector and patron of the arts, "Qua patet orbis - As far as the horizon stretches", is the adequate motto for the museum.

The Museum Kurhaus Kleve disposes of a rich collection of 20th century art with the bequest of Ewald Mataré as its basis.

The collection of contemporary art leads from Joseph Beuys , Christo , Arman , Robert Morris and Yves Klein (to name only a few famous artists of the 1960s) to Lothar Baumgarten , Franz Gertsch , Richard Long , Mario Merz , Gerhard Richter and Richard Serra and finally to most recent developments, which are being represented by e.g. Stephan Balkenhol , Martin Creed , Günther Förg , Andreas Gursky , Thomas Ruf f , Thomas Schütte , Thomas Struth , Mark Tansey , Paloma Varga Weisz , and Jeff Wall . Additionally, the museum is proud to present an extraordinary ensemble of medieval sculpture from the region, and with the Collection Robert Angerhausen it disposes of an important graphic collection.

The exhibition-program of the Museum Kurhaus Kleve concentrates on international modern and contemporary art and featured up to date shows.
