Profile
Ludwig I founded the Neue Pinakothek in the mid 19th century as the firstpublic museum in Europe devoted entirely to contemporary art. With this future-orientated initiative the king of Bavaria crowned both his commitment and love of art and culture in a way that would shape the character of Munich as a city of the arts right up to the present day. His collection, presented to the public in 1853 with the inauguration of the Neue Pinakothek, now comprises masterpieces ranging from Jacques Louis David and Francisco Goya to Friedrich Overbeck , Caspar David Friedrich , Adolph von Menzel and Max Liebermann , and also includes works by Gustave Courbet , Edouard Manet , Claude Monet , Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gaugin.
Today, this unique collection of 19th-century art - that is treasured by visitors from around the world - is housed in a gallery designed by Alexander von Branca and opened in 1981, the original building having been bombed in 1944/45. The re-allocation and expansion of the rooms for French Impressionist painting and early 20th century works in autumn 2008 lend new expression to an era in the Neue Pinakothek that invites being rediscovered. With works by the three great masters Paul Cézanne , Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso 's early paintings hung in one room, the artistic legacy of the 19th century is more or less summed up in one space. The freedom of an art form running 'parallel to nature', the autonomy of colour and space, figure and form, create the prerequisites for the radical innovations which heralded in the art of the 20th century with Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism and abstract painting. The Neue Pinakothek invites an exploration of the 19th century that spans the period from the Enlightenment to the beginning of Modernism and renders the aesthetic, cultural-historical and mental upheavals of this time visible while, at the same time, forging a logical link between the Alte Pinakothek and the Pinakothek der Moderne .
