Profile
Nolan Judin Berlin is relocating!
David Nolan and Juerg Judin launched their Berlin gallery with an exhibition of Alexander Ross drawings in May 2008. This exhibition was presented in what is by now one of Berlin 's most acclaimed new buildings: Die Tankstelle, a converted petrol station from the early 50s. By the end of summer 2008, Nolan Judin Berlin's new space in Heidestrasse was completed and inaugurated with an ambitious exhibition of sculptures by the late Ian Hamilton Finlay .
For more than twenty years, David Nolan has played an important role in the New York art scene. Founded in 1987, the original mission of the David Nolan Gallery was to exhibit contemporary works on paper by American and European artists. The gallery was the first in the United States to organize solo exhibitions of works on paper by notable artists such as Dieter Roth, Sigmar Polke, Carroll Dunham and Martin Kippenberger.
David Nolan and Juerg Judin had met as dealer and collector in the early 90s. Through their shared passion for drawngs they first became friends and in 2003, when Judin opened a gallery in Zurich, they became collaborators. They jointly mounted exhibitions with artists such as Barry Le Va , Richard Artschwager and Carroll Dunham. Several important collaborative publications are witness to the productivity of the New York-Zurich liaison. In 2007, Judin left Zurich to gain a foothold in one of the world's most exciting art scenes, Berlin . Establishing a new gallery together seemed to be a natural conclusion of nearly two decades of shared enthusiasm and experience.
Nolan Judin Berlin is located in the heart of the new art district that is prospering around the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin's major museum for contemporary art. Unsurprisingly, the program focuses on artists that are accomplished draughtsmen, painters and sculptors. The gallery brings together established artists with younger, aspiring artists. Representing the estate of George Grosz , a towering figure of 20th century art, brings a historic dimension to the gallery's program. David Nolan and Juerg Judin continue to produce comprehensive books of high production value-monographs on Adrian Ghenie 's paintings and George Grosz ' American oeuvre being the most recent.
