The gallery was founded by Alfred Schmela who showed already in the 60's art works of today famous artists . Including names such as Joseph Beuys , Yves Klein and Gerhard Richter .
Actually Schmela Alfred was an artist, but is more known through his work as a pioneer gallerist of contemporary art in Germany.
After the death of Alfred Schmela his wife Monika Schmela continued the gallery and although the exhibitions were rare there was a lively art trade and the name Schmela did not loose its importance in the art world.
Ulrike Schmela manages the gallery till today, while offering no exhibitions anymore, the youngest of the dynasty Schmela, the daughter of the legendary galerist Andreas Brüning and Ulrike Schmela, namely Lena Bruening continues the family tradition in Berlin . Lena Brüning Galerie
