The galerieofmarseille is set up by the Bureau des compétences et désirs, an organisation that has been producing works of art since 1994. The decision to open this gallery lies in the will to continue the organisation's ongoing commitment to artists by offering their work a place on the art market.
From this point of view, Mars eilles offers a decentralised position, all the more attractive since the mutations of its social and urban space can generate a more focused economic context, interested and involved in contemporary creation.
The first exhibitions will present works by:
Michelangelo Pistoletto (November 2006 - January 2007), Yvan Salomone (April - May 2007) and Yto Barrada (November 2007 - January 2008).
Through this first series of exhibitions, galerieofmarseille proposes three different artists' visions inspired by the Mediterranean, in general:
- A cultural space, cradle of civilization, whose very richness is the source of tensions and conflicts, and for which Michelangelo Pistoletto would like to develop a policy of cultural exchanges.
- A work zone, that is losing its activity because of economic reasons, and that is shying away from its population ; these are the vast harbour sites painted by Yvan Salomone in Brittany, Mars eilles and on the African coasts,
- And finally a transit area, a prohibited trip to the inhabitants of the Maghreb and which they rightly dream about; a desire to leave, which haunts people's everyday and permeates up to the urban landscape, and that is photographed by Yto Barrada .
