Room for Collectors
From May 2010 onwards, the exhibition space me Collectors Room Berlin, conceived by Thomas Olbricht, will present the Olbricht Collection - one of the most extensive private collections in Europe - in a series of alternating exhibitions. The collection encompasses works from the early 16th century all the way to the most recent contemporary art. The building itself - situated in Auguststrasse at the heart of Berlin, provides a permanent domicile for the collection and in consequence, also scope for other international private collections.
Room for new perspectives
The me in the name me Collectors Room stands for moving energies and provides an initial indication that this venue is not a museum or a municipal art gallery in the conventional sense. It is rather a world of experience, which opens itself up for collectors, curators, and anyone exploring the broad field of art. In future, different curators will be invited to develop and present their own individual perspectives on the Olbricht Collection: a collection predicated upon the express avowal of a subjective view of collecting. Thomas Olbricht doesn't shy away from surprises and contradictions - existential themes, such as Eros, death, and transience forming the main programmatic emphases of the collection. A visit to me Collectors Room promises a sensual experience that will open new perspectives and reanimate the imagination. In future, other, even more seldom seen private collections will be exhibited with a similar focus.
Room for exchange and engagement
The residential and exhibition building, situated in the immediate vicinity of the Kunst-Werke Berlin , was designed by the architectural firm Düttmann + Kleymann in conjunction with Thomas Olbricht. The generous 1.300 sq m exhibition space enables a division of the room, which invites both a direct engagement with the collection, as well as flexible open spaces for visitors. Behind the high glass façade there are a number of amenities, such as a Café, a Shop and a lounge area, spread across two floors. Ample space then for visitors to exchange ideas about the things they have seen.
The collection hosts a number of great names, such as John Currin , Eric Fischl , Franz Gertsch , Cindy Sherman , Marlene Dumas or Gerhard Richter that consort with new discoveries, such as Corinne von Lebusa , Tomoko Nagai, Rachel Goodyear or Jonas Burgert .
