His father has devoted a lifetime to his art collection. "I grew up with art," states Emmanuel Walderdorff, 40, and decided for the time being, however, studies in business and agricultural economics in Würzburg and Hohenheim. The result: From now on he brought his economic capabilities in harmony with his tendency toward art. That principle the Cologne gallerist practices admirably up to today. After three years assisting in the well settled Thomas Rehbein Gallery Walderdorff founded his first gallery in late 2000, among other things with the exhibition "Julia Schrader - Three couples". In 2007 he moved to new stately rooms (300 m²) in the Belgian district of the Rhineland metropolis, where just the fourth solo exhibition by Julia Schrader has come to an end. The tiny amount of artists at the beginning has now grown up to a sizable list of international artists with a certain emphasis on figurative drawing and painting from Western and Eastern Europe. Walderdorff describes his approach: "The gallery program focuses entirely on contemporary art, primarily young artists, whose content and aesthetics are attractive for me. My gaze is directed here, with a preference for figurative, on its own aesthetic positions, whose sensuous nature to draw me into its spell. At the same time they are to revive neglected or retracted as discourses on religion, romance and politics, without forgetting the realities and developments of our time into account. " The gallery connects with its (often peers) artists a long and close friendship, which also applies for the artists themselves. The Munich artist Thomas Thiede for example, from which the ‘Pinakothek der Moderne’ has just bought a picture, Walderdorff has been working together since 2002. Walderdorff attaches great importance to her opinion when it comes to the cautious expansion of the program or the artist list. Even in the network to museums, art museums and their curators he usually goes hand in hand with his artists. That strategy has led, for example in the case of Matthias Beckmann, in 2009 to a remarkable increase of attention. For Walderdorff the persistence and continuity in the gallery work is much more important than the frequent presence at art fairs. He vehemently opposes the escape of many galleries from Cologne to Berlin,: "I think it's important that the art scene in Germany is characterized federally and not all concentrated in the capital". represented artists |
